Activated Carbon Adsorption Testing between Iodine Value, Methylene Blue Value

Iodine Value, Methylene Blue Value & Molasses no. are the common terms used to define the adsorptive power of activated carbon.

But very few people are aware about the difference between this parameters.

Now depending on the application for which Activated Carbon (AC) is used the choice of defining AC varies.

Based on the size of the impurities present in the substance the most important parameter is selected to chose the right activated carbon.

For example, if the size of impurities present in the material is <1nm then Iodine value is considered for selection of right AC.

If the size of impurities present in the product is >1nm & <25nm then Methylene Blue Value is considered

Similarly if the size of impurities is >25nm then molasses no. is considered for selecting the right activated carbon.

I hope this post clarifies why different parameters are preferred for selecting the right activated carbon.
